5 Maintenance Tips to Take Care of Your Window Tint

Flying Window Tinters Blogger • March 21, 2023

There are a few window maintenance tips that all homeowners should know about. Here’s how to take care of your window tint at home.

Window tint

More than 1.5 million cases of skin cancer were diagnosed in 2020 alone. The primary cause of skin cancers is exposure to ultraviolet radiation, such as from the sun.

Most people believe they're safe in their homes, offices, or vehicles, but glass doesn't block all UV rays. Thankfully, you can increase your protection with a window tint.

However, it's important to properly clean and maintain your tint to ensure it lasts as long as possible. Use these tips to avoid damage and extend the lifespan of your product.

1. Clean With a Soft Cloth

Before you clean your windows, you must wait long enough for the tint to dry. Giving your tinted windows enough drying time is crucial to avoid ruining them, so don't clean them until it's safe.

After a tinting service, most window tints take about four days to dry, so you shouldn't roll those windows down or even think about cleaning them yet. Talk to your window tint installer to find out how long you should wait before opening your windows or cleaning them.

When you need to clean your residential or car windows, be sure to use a soft material such as a microfiber cloth to avoid scratches. Although paper towels may seem soft at first, the rough fibers can damage the tint.

2. Use the Right Cleaner

The type of cleaner you use also matters. You may not need to clean your windows for a while, but when it's time, avoid ammonia products and harsh chemicals. Instead, use a wet, soapy cloth to remove the dirt and dry it with a soft material.

If soap and water aren't enough to clean your windows, use a cleaner designed for window tint.

Microfiber cloths are ideal for cleaning your windows as they're non-abrasive and can hold up to seven times their weight in water. That means less wiping, and you won't have to worry about accumulating waste or scratching the film.

Clean your windows in the shade to avoid streaking. Direct sunlight can cause cleaning products to dry too fast, which leaves streaks behind.

Remember to avoid saturating your windows when cleaning, especially the edges. The edges of the window tint are the most vulnerable, which can cause bubbling if they get too wet.

3. Dry the Film Completely

Another important part of your window maintenance is to ensure you dry the windows completely after cleaning them. A rubber squeegee or microfiber cloth are great tools to clean the window and prevent streaking. Again, remember to pay special attention to the edges.

Any water left on the film can cause damage, such as bubbling or other problems, and shorten the lifespan of your window tint. Wash and dry in the direction of the seams, if there are any, to avoid accidentally lifting the edge.

Don't forget to clean and dry the weatherstripping as well, which is the seal around the windows. Dirt and small rocks can get trapped here and scratch the car window when you roll it up and down.

4. Avoid Scratches From Seatbelts and Sharp Objects

Make sure that you and your passengers enter and exit the car with care, especially when it comes to taking off your seatbelts. Seatbelts can scratch or damage your window tints. Additionally, you'll want to be careful when loading and unloading the vehicle with any cargo that might have sharp edges.

For commercial and residential window tints, avoid placing furniture or anything that might scratch or chip the window nearby.

Avoid placing stickers, decals, or suction cups on the window that might damage the surface when you remove them. Adhesives left behind can also attract dirt and dust, creating an unattractive look.

5. Keep Up With Window Tint Maintenance

There are tons of benefits to window tinting, and it can even increase your property value. However, you can only achieve this if you keep them in good condition. Keep up with regular care to keep those windows looking great.

As with any big investment, you want to keep up with maintenance to ensure your product lasts as long as possible. Taking the necessary precautions to protect your tint should become part of your routine.

So, what should be part of your tinting maintenance guide?

For one, you should regularly inspect your windows to look for any imperfections, such as creases, bubbles, etc. Talk to your installer about what to do if you spot any problems, and be sure to act as soon as you notice them.

Park your vehicle in a shady spot when you can, such as in a garage or under a tree. This protects your tint against the effects of UV fading and extends the lifespan of your product. It also prevents streaking after you wash your windows.

Talk to the manufacturer or your installer to learn more crucial care tips you can add to your to-do list.
